Many of our social activities often center around drinking, whether it’s happy hours, birthday parties, or a casual Friday night out. However, from a health perspective, alcohol offers little benefit, and its downsides tend to outweigh the positives. That said, the association between drinking and fun is hard to ignore—after all, life’s more enjoyable with a little excitement! That's why we've come up with our favorite SWW® alternatives for staying social while skipping the alcohol.

Try a group fitness class instead of happy hour

  • Instead of heading to the nearest bar after work, consider gathering your friends for a workout session. It's a great way to stay active while catching up. Explore a new fitness studio or try a different instructor to keep things fresh. Afterward, extend the fun by hitting up a smoothie bar instead of a cocktail lounge for some healthy post-workout socializing.

Start a recipe or cookbook club

  • Food is a central part of socializing, so why not mix things up with a cookbook club? It's a great alternative to a typical dinner party. If you’re focused on health, you can steer the group’s selections toward recipes that align with your goals. As the host, you also control the drink options—serve up some healthy mocktails or other alcohol-free beverages.

Try an Escape Room

  • For a fun, non-drinking activity, give an escape room a try—especially if you have kids! It’s a fantastic way to engage your mind and work together toward a common goal. 

Volunteer

  • Instead of brunch and Bloody Marys, switch things up by spending a weekend volunteering with friends and family. It’s personally rewarding, promotes community engagement, and offers a healthier way to bond. Pro tip: if you hve kids, consider volunteering at their school with your other parent friends! 

Get outside

  • A group hike or bike ride is another way to socialize while staying active. Choose a scenic trail or bike route, and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and exercise—without the unhealthy temptations.

Spa day
