Hydration 101

Hydration 101

Did you know that humans are 60% water? Our hearts and brains are 73% water, skin is 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79% and our bones are 31% water. Water lubricates joints, protects the spinal cord and even gets rid of waste. Water is essential for the functioning of our entire body!

There are many benefits of staying hydrated. Here are some of the biggest benefits:

Immune function

When we are hydrated, our body naturally releases bacteria and toxins that cause infection.

Improved digestion

Water helps our bodies break down food so nutrients can be absorbed.

Increased satiety

Studies have found that consuming water before and after a meal increases satiety and helps us to consume less than we would otherwise.

Improved lymphatic functions

Hydration is key to a functioning lymphatic system. Lymph fluid is made from 90% water. When we are dehydrated, our lymphatic system does not function optimally and does not remove toxins as efficiently.

Prevents constipation

Water helps to soften stool to make going to the bathroom easier.

  1. Drink a liter of water in the morning every day—before your coffee
  2. Set yourself up for success by putting a liter of water on your nightstand before bed
  3. Aim to drink 3-4 liters of water per day
  4. Drink on an empty stomach between meals
