Understanding Cacao

Cacao —the power behind one of our favorite superfoods

When you think of cacao, you might initially think of a decadent piece of chocolate cake or a big cup of hot cocoa, but the reality is there are amazing ways to enjoy cacao and its inherent health benefits without the negative implications that come with adding in a lot of sugar.

Preventative Aid

Cacao packs a punch with antioxidants that help prevent cellular damage. Studies have also shown that cacao can be beneficial in preventing heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It’s also rich in theobromine, which helps support cell growth, regulates inflammation, and improves circulation.

Brain & Mood Booster

This superfood really does wonders for the brain. Because it is rich in flavonoids, cacao can help increase cerebral blood flow, enhance memory, improve focus, and support overall brain health. It’s also rich in magnesium, which promotes relaxation and better sleep. The most popularly known benefit of this is often associated with chocolate—it creates those feel-good hormones, aka serotonin.

Respiratory & Anti-Inflammatory Support

Theobromine in cocoa has been found to relax the lungs, promoting deeper breathing, which can be especially beneficial for those with respiratory concerns. Additionally, cocoa naturally balances out our inflammatory response, helping support long-term wellness.

How to healthily incorporate more cacao into your diet

What you’re not going to do is raid the candy counter and stock up on processed sugary chocolate bars. The key to reap the benefits while still enjoying this flavor profile is to seek out high-quality, minimally processed dark chocolate. We love incorporating raw cacao nibs into a smoothie bowl, sipping on a hot, dark chocolate LMNT drink, or simply breaking off a piece of delicious 80%+ dark chocolate as an easy post-dinner treat.
